J. Irwin (bangkutaman, Johnny & The Pistol Heroes) menggabungkan chord blues-nya dengan nada-nada pop yang terdengar sangat tenang dan mengalun seiring dengan story telling lyrics yang dinyanyikannya. Lagu Hymn For A Friend in the Sky terdengar seperti John Squire yang meminjam suara Ian Brown sambil memainkan chord blues rock khas Led Zeppelin. Pada lagu berikutnya ia lebih mencoba memperlihatkan karakter suara dan lagunya yang asli, suatu testimony siapakah ia sebenarnya. 2 track yang ada membawa pendengarnya mengerti, siapakah J Irwin dan apa yang ada di hatinya berikut dengan selera musik yang ia bawakan. J. Irwin’s Short History
J. Irwin is an Indonesian guitar player with a complete name; Justinus Michael Irwin Ardyanto, born in Surabaya on July 22nd, 1981. Around 1996, he moved to Bekasi and there he started to know and play guitar, both electric and acoustic. at that time, he was also trying to participating in school-bands, unfortunately, it was going nowhere. He used to lock himself in his bedroom and entertain himself with his father’s tape-deck and shitty guitar. in 1999, Irwin moved to Yogyakarta to start his study at Sanata Dharma University. As he was doing his study there, he found lots of talented people who shared the same interests. at this year also he created bangkutaman along with Bayu, Acum (Wahyu Nugroho), and Deni. Later on, bangkutaman found the most definite sound and soul in the famous formation consisted of 3 people; Acum (vocal-bass), Irwin (backing vocal-guitars), and Dedyck (drums). They were really into the Stone Roses and Irwin was heavily influenced by John Squire and other indie/brit-pop guitar hero from U.K. Bangkutaman was known as folk-rock with acid atmosphere of madchester sounds band and Irwin was greatly represent the hard-rock side as he began to explore knowledge about Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page. As time goes by, Irwin became the lead-guitar and song-writer of bangkutaman. For 5 years, Irwin and bangkutaman had a great run but when it was 2005, everyone started to see things differently.

J. Irwin left bangkutaman and made a new project called Johnny & the Pistol Heroes. Irwin found psychedelic, blues, hard-rock, and virtuosity guitar style as the basic idea of Johnny & the Pistol Heroes. Johnny & the Pistol Heroes consists of Irwin (Guitars), Oka (Vocals), Gober (Bass), and Ali (Drums). Right now, Irwin is building his own studio called Townside Studio. He also works as a music correspondent for a campus magazine called “Dialogue” belongs to Sanata Dharma University. With his own studio, he makes songs for indie-films by J-Toku Community and also doing his solo project where he actually sings. Irwin also began to explore his knowledge on sound-engineering in his own home-studio which he got from Gembus, Ari Wulu, Kang Narko, and Ojie. Until today, Irwin still locks himself in a room (studio) with his guitar and sound-system, entertaining his mind and soul.

“Senja Menggila” adalah debut single dari album terbaru White Shoes & The Couples Company yang akan dirilis di penghujung tahun 2009 oleh Aksara Records. Single ini dirilis secara gratis dalam 2 format. Format CD dibagikan bersamaan dengan sebuah artbook dengan judul sama yang berisi karya seni visual dari beberapa seniman muda Jakarta dan Yogyakarta dalam jumlah yang terbatas yaitu sebanyak 100 kopi. Format digital yang dirilis oleh Yes No Wave Music ini ditemani beberapa single lain yang pernah dirilis dalam album-album kompilasi di tahun 2006, 2007 dan 2008.

Lagu Senja Menggila ini mengingatkan kita pada scene beatnik yang tampak modis dalam balutan irama jazz, funk, calypso dan komposisi big band. Di beberapa bagian yaitu pada gesekan string dan bebunyian tiup bisa ditemukan gaya oriental yang membekas semenjak Aksi Kucing. Ini adalah perluasan wawasan dan wilayah dalam koridor retro. Musik popouler seperti ini sudah selayaknya bergaung dalam keheningan sebuah perpustakaan daerah yang tentunya sudah lazim disusupi oleh sebuah piranti mp3 player dari negeri cina. (Wok The Rock)

In August 2002, in an art institute at Cikini, central Jakarta, two lover from the fine art faculty Rio & Sari decided to form a band together with their fellow in the faculty named Saleh. This was the first formation of White Shoes & The Couples Company, which features Sari in vocal & violin, Rio on rhythm guitar and Saleh on melody guitar. The three of them made their first debut in this formation in a college event. However, the trio formation diverged from their original plan where actually Sari and Rio had keenly asked a married couple from the music faculty to join the band the couples was Ricky Surya Virgana & Mela Virgana. Yet the couple was hard to meet since they were busy lecturing and covering for orchestras. Several months later, the couple join White Shoes & The Couples Company with Ricky on Bass and cello and Mela on viola, keyboards and piano.

Serigala Jahanam merupakan band yang dikomandoi oleh Dede yang juga editor sebuah newsletter Wasted Rockers asal Bandung. Band ini memainkan musik metal yang kurang begitu diperhatikan di blantika musik metal nusantara. Boro-boro Log Zhelebour, bahkan mas Sam Dunn aja luput membahasnya di film dokumenternya yang lagi naik daun dan jadi pedoman metalhead muda abad ini. Musik ini biasa disebut dengan nama sludge metal atau drone metal. Ini memang musik metal yang malas, karena temponya yang pelan dan berat dengan atmosfer yang segelap aktifitas PLN di musim hujan ini. Mungkin hal ini yang menjadikannya seperti lagu ‘cengeng’ dan kurang digemari para metalhead. Akan tetapi genre ini tidak sendirian karena memiliki sohib yang cukup erat yaitu gerombolan stoner metal, doom metal dan juga sering disebut-sebut sebagai bagian dari post-metal.

Ilustrasi sampul dikerjakan oleh teman kami Bob Sick Yudhita yang lukisannya saat ini mendadak laris manis puluhan juta rupiah. Mini album ini cukup menarik sebagai bingkisan natal bagi anda semua, dan sebagai bingkisan yang akan mengiringi gegap gempita tahun baru dengan nuansa yang lambat, pelan dan seram.

Menurut sang vokalis, Album mini ini adalah bentuk terimakasih The Upstairs kepada Modern Dalings yang telah mendukung dari awal karir mereka.

Ini adalah rilisan pertama Yes No Wave Music bersama sebuah band dari arus utama dan sekaligus menegaskan bahwa label ini tidak membangun batasan-batasan genre maupun wilayah industri musik.

To celebrate the independence day of Indonesia, Jakarta new wave band, The Upstairs, released their mini album (EP) with six songs to all of their fans around the world via Yes No Wave Music. According to the vocalist, this EP was a gift from The Upstairs to Modern Darlings who already been supportive from the early carrier of the band. This is the first Yes No Wave Music release with mainstream band and also to ensure that this label didn’t build any limitation to any genre or music industry area.

There’s only one new song in this album. The others song was an old material which have a different point to be heard. The “Alexander Graham Bell” and “Television” single has already been released in “JKT:SKRG” compilation from Aksara Records which must be unfamiliar to the ears of The Upstairs fans from many places around the world. Collecting and listening to the live concert records always become very interesting, especially for someone who never seen this band on stage. In “Terekam (Tak Pernah Mati)” single, we could hear the silly speech of Jimi Multhazam which proved the reason why this band become favourable to many youngsters and having dozens of performance in many school events. The other single with live version, “Lompat”, which being performed with acoustic instruments, will entertain you in different ways.

Someday, this EP could be a classic collection. And it’s very important to remember that a digital data could be easily lost or damaged. So, go download this album right away and keep it very carefully. (Wok The Rock)
